Mission and History
Mission Statement of the North Carolina Art Education Association
The mission of the North Carolina Art Education Association is to promote and improve quality arts education throughout the state. We are unified with the National Art Education Association to provide a voice at the national level. As a professional organization, NCAEA seeks to provide an opportunity for collaboration amongst visual arts educators, access to resources for art education and leadership in the state in regards to best practices in art education. Our Plan of Action, adopted in 2006, focuses on three goals: strengthen leadership, increase service, and maintain and strengthen the organization. Within those goals are objectives pertinent to our Professional Development Conference. Those include: (1) Develop leadership training presentations to encourage new leaders among the general membership; (2) Offer regional and state wide staff development that utilizes local expertise; (3) Address professional education issues; and (4) Provide an annual professional conference, which motivates large attendance and inspires on–going membership. Our members are committed to leadership and service in promoting and improving art education to better fulfill these goals. We are dedicated to teaching about the richness of art from cultures around the world. We feel that as educators we have a responsibility to teach students about the ethnic and cultural diversity in our state and nation. As the world changes, so does its art. As professionals, it is imperative for us to understand and teach students the impact that both history and technology has in our field of study. We stand proud and tall to be a core subject in the 21st Century skills. We provide our members, and the community, resources to infuse the 21st Century skills into all aspects of this educational vision.
History of NCAEA
The North Carolina Art Education Association (NCAEA) was established in 1964 and is unified with the National Art Education Association. Archives of the association are housed in the library at Western Carolina University. There are currently over 800 members who comprise eight divisions: Elementary, Middle, Secondary, Higher Education, Museum Education, Supervision, Student (College Undergraduates), and Retired. The members represent eight regions covering the entire state. The Executive Board consists of the Past president, President, President Elect, Treasurer, Secretary, and Member at Large. Elections for the Executive Board and division chairs are every two years with elections for regional representatives on the alternate years. Other board members are recruited, appointed or are volunteers. With membership into NCAEA, members receive the national journal, Art Education; the national newsletter, NAEA News; and other national benefits. The NCAEA newsletter, By Design, was changed from print to electronic format in 2008. A scholarly journal, North Carolina Journal of Visual Culture, is published biannually with its inaugural publication in 2007. NCAEA sponsors an annual fall professional development conference that features keynote addresses from artists and art educators, member presentations, hands-on workshops, commercial exhibitors, and student and member art exhibitions. The annual conference is rotated to various regions of the state to help all members with travel accessibility. Regional representatives provide professional development opportunities each spring/early summer for their area. For many, our rural and /or small school districts, as well as, non- public school educators, NCAEA provides their only access to visual arts focused professional development, a state of North Carolina requirement to maintain their teaching license.
