NAEA Convention 2013 , Fort Worth, Texas
The National Art Education Association Convention in Fort Worth, Texas is over but not forgotten. It was so exciting to realize that I along with thousands of educators gathered in one location to promote art education. The opportunities to gain professional development were unlimited. The samples from vendors overflowed my conference bag.
As your President, I and President-Elect, Juline Chevalier, represented North Carolina at the Delegate’s Assembly. During Delegate’s Assembly, (which consists of one or two representatives from each state), we worked to help develop five new position statements on art education. The delegates reviewed, discussed, and voted on these statement to recommend that these be adopted. NAEA has adopted many platform statements in the past few years which can aid you in your professional needs. The NAEA has provided all statements on their website. (click) You can find statements from “What We Believe” to “Visual Arts as a Core Academic Subject”. Check them out!
One special event of the convention is the presenting of region and national awards. North Carolina had two recipients of Southeastern Region awards. Cheryl Maney received the Southeastern Art Educator of the Year Award and Margi O’Shea received the Southeastern Secondary Division Award. Congratulations to both ladies for these accomplishments.
Our North Carolina Youth Art Month Flag designed by Jennifer M. was on display in Fort Worth during the convention. Ashley Berdeau, art educator at Fairmont High School submitted the winning flag design. Ashley attended the YAM Ceremony in the Fort Worth Convention Center where everyone gathered to view the flags, view each state’s student artwork panels and celebrate Youth Art Month.
2013 General Assembly Student Art Exhibit and YAM Reception
There was no time to stay home and rest. The day after we returned home from Fort Worth, we traveled to Raleigh for the 2013 General Assembly Student Exhibit Reception. Jamie Lynn Moore, Aimee Mills and Michelle Harrell organized the exhibit and reception. This is our sixth year that we have placed an exhibit of student artwork on display in the General Assembly for all legislatures to view as they walk to various sessions and meetings. On Monday March 11th, young artists, their parents, their art teachers and legislature gathered at the art display to celebrate the beginning of the yearlong exhibit. Each student received a certificate and an array of art supplies from some of our vendors. Those attending could also stay and be recognized during an evening House session. Students and teachers had their photos taken on the main red carpet staircase.

YAM
Our annual activities surrounding Youth Art Month are being planned. Jamie Moore is working on our new installment of the General Assembly Student Exhibit and Aimee Mills is coordinating our state flag, our display at NAEA convention and NCAEA scrapbook. We will hold an opening reception in March for our Student Exhibit at the General Assembly in Raleigh. Be part of YAM, by displaying your student’s artwork at school, in the community, statewide and national.
